Asahi Intecc is a world leader in PCI guidewires and penetration catheters. FY2026/06 sales grew 15.6% at constant FX, the operating margin jumped to 31.1% from 25.1% on productivity, ROE reached 19.8%, and the company holds ¥55bn of net cash. The FY2027/06 guide (OP +15.3%) looks conservative against six straight years of beating the initial guide, yet consensus sits only 1.1% above it, so a beat is likely. The price already pays about 23.5x next-year earnings, the margin is guided flat at about 32% to 2030, and 26% of sales and a 12% single customer sit in China, where volume-based procurement and a preference for domestic products are open risks. The scenario-weighted return is about 5%.

The most important missing evidence is whether China pricing holds (no FY2027 tender outcomes were found) and Q1 FY2027 results on 2026-11-13.

Investment thesis

  1. The franchise has unusual margins. FY2026 gross margin was 70.4% (67.7% a year earlier). The medical segment earned a 36.4% OP margin on ¥126.8bn of sales (FY 説明会 p.4, p.7). The products are PCI guidewires, penetration catheters, and peripheral, abdominal and neurovascular devices, sold in all regions (p.3). Reported fact.
  2. Growth is real, but FX flattered FY2026. Sales +21.2% reported, +15.6% at constant FX. OP +50.3% reported, +37.4% at constant FX (p.5). The device segment includes the newly consolidated Nitta Mold (p.3), so organic medical growth was lower. By region in medical: China +32.3% (+24.1% ex-FX), US +13.6%, Europe +15.4% (+4.5% ex-FX), Japan +6.5% (p.9). Reported fact.
  3. The guide decelerates and looks conservative. FY2027 guide: sales ¥161.8bn (+11.3%, +11.4% ex-FX), OP ¥52.1bn (+15.3%, +16.7% ex-FX), gross margin 70.9%. FX is assumed at USD ¥155, EUR ¥179 and CNY ¥22.00 (p.21–22). Given the beat record, the guide is a floor more than a midpoint. Company guidance; the floor reading is an inference.
  4. The long-range targets imply slower growth. Revised MTP2030 targets for FY2030/06: sales ¥212.5bn, OPM 32.0%, ROE ≥20%, ROIC ≥19% (有報 p.11, p.13). From the FY2027 guide, that is sales CAGR of about 9.5% and no further margin expansion. New treatment devices are not expected to contribute before FY2031 (有報 p.11). Company guidance.
  5. China is the swing factor. Medical sales in China were ¥37.4bn, 25.7% of consolidated sales (有報 p.22). The largest customer, the Chinese distributor 北京嘉事唯衆医療器械, bought ¥17.8bn (12.2%) (有報 p.102). The 有報 names "centralised procurement and preference for domestic products" as a risk (p.22). A Nanning (China) plant starts production in 2030, and start-up costs are in the FY2027 guide (説明会 p.21). Each ¥1 move in CNY/JPY moves OP by about ¥1.82bn (p.21). Reported fact.

Business and earnings

Asahi Intecc sells minimally invasive devices built on fine-wire processing technology. Products are made in Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Japan (有報 p.102 fixed assets). It has two segments:

  • Medical (87% of sales): own-brand guidewires and catheters sold direct or through distributors. The Japan business also resells Penumbra peripheral products (説明会 p.9).
  • Device: OEM medical components and industrial parts, at a 45.6% margin on external sales (p.7).

Profit engine: PCI guidewires and penetration catheters in all regions. In FY2026, non-cardiovascular products (peripheral, abdominal, neuro) grew overseas (p.3, p.9). Low-margin products were dropped, including the China balloon business and some Japan diagnostic catheters (p.9). That helps mix but trims sales.

Momentum: standalone quarterly OP rose 34.0%, 47.8%, 56.8% and 78.8% YoY through FY2026. Q4 is structurally weaker (21.1% OPM in Q4 against 32–36% in Q1–Q3, and 15.5% in Q4 FY2025), mainly from year-end costs (fact sheet). The two-year profit leap combined:

  • gross margin up 2.7 pt from productivity,
  • SG&A growing slower than sales (39.4% of sales),
  • ¥1.1bn lower goodwill amortisation after the FY2025 impairments,
  • a weaker yen: +¥6.7bn on sales and about +¥3.9bn on OP (p.4–5).

US tariffs added ¥1.15bn to cost of sales (p.4).

One-offs: FY2025 NP was cut by ¥9.24bn of impairments on robotics and US acquisitions (朝日サージカルロボティクス, Pathways Medical, Rev.1 Engineering, ASAHI Medical Technologies) (有報 p.81). FY2026 impairments were ¥1.06bn. FY2026 also had a larger gain on investment-security sales (+¥1.5bn YoY, p.4). Restated without it, FY2026 NP is about ¥31bn and EPS about ¥117 (inference, ~30% tax).

Forecast test

Guidance (2026-08-14): sales ¥161.8bn, OP ¥52.1bn, RP ¥52.6bn, NP ¥37.8bn, EPS ¥142.59. Consensus (IFIS, 2026-10-16): OP ¥52.7bn (+1.1% above guide), NP ¥38.1bn. FY2028/06 consensus is OP ¥59.3bn and NP ¥42.8bn. Consensus OP rose 7.6% over 3 months. The target price is ¥4,579 (+10.3% over 3 months).

Track record: the company has beaten its initial OP guide every year since FY2021, by a growing margin. FY2026 went from an initial ¥32.6bn, through a revision in February 2026 (Kabutan), to a final guide of ¥42.2bn and an actual of ¥45.2bn. The FY2027 guide holds gross margin almost flat (+0.5 pt) and FX flat, and adds ¥3.7bn of non-R&D SG&A plus the Nanning start-up (p.24). That is consistent with the company's habit of guiding low. The beat is expected by investors, but consensus barely reflects it.

FX: In early October, USD/JPY was about ¥157–158 and EUR/JPY about ¥178 (Gendai, 2026-10-14, from the 7936 review). Against the guide's ¥155 / ¥179, that is a small tailwind: about +¥0.5bn on OP from USD (inference using the ¥203m per ¥1 sensitivity). CNY, the largest sensitivity, was not checked.

Seasonal progress: not assessable until Q1 (results 2026-11-13). Q1 has carried 28.8% (FY2026) and 32.3% (FY2025) of full-year OP. A Q1 OP of ¥15.0–16.8bn would be in line with the guide.

Revision probability: Medium–High. A raise at H1 (February 2027) is the base expectation given the history. The risk to that is China pricing.

Financial strength and capital allocation

  • Balance sheet (2026-06-30): cash ¥64.3bn, debt ¥9.1bn, net cash ¥55.1bn, equity ratio 79.4%, current ratio 3.78 (fact sheet; 説明会 p.18). Gates pass.
  • Cash conversion: OCF was ¥40.1bn in FY2026 (OCF/NP 1.25). Before that: ¥40.5bn (3.18, inflated by the impairment), ¥34.7bn and ¥19.1bn. FCF turned positive from FY2023 and was ¥28.4bn in FY2026. Inventory days rose to 253 from 232 as inventory grew ¥5.2bn (p.18). Long manufacturing chains make that normal for this business, but it is worth watching.
  • Capital efficiency: ROE was 10.2–11.2% in FY2022–24, 8.4% in FY2025 (impairments) and 19.8% in FY2026. ROA rose to 15.6%. IFIS ROIC is 17.9%. The rise came from margin: the net margin went to 22.1% from 10.6%, while asset turnover edged up to 0.67 and leverage is low at 1.26x assets ÷ equity. The MTP targets ROE ≥20% and ROIC ≥19% by FY2030 (有報 p.13). The FY2027 guide already implies ROE of about 21.8% (fact sheet), so the targets look modest.
  • Peers (Yahoo! Finance Japan, 2026-10-16, actual ROE): Terumo 9.2%, Japan Lifeline 14.9%.
  • Returns: the policy is a payout ratio of about 35% (有報 p.42). DPS was ¥24.23 (FY2025), ¥48.24 (FY2026, including a ¥6.03 50th-anniversary special) and ¥49.91 for FY2027. One buyback of up to ¥15bn ran from 2025-05-16 to 2025-10-30. Net cash of ¥55bn is under-used against a ¥928bn market cap, but it is small relative to it.
  • Investment: capex was ¥9.6bn (1.08x depreciation) and R&D ¥13.4bn (9.2% of sales; guided ¥15.2bn for FY2027). Past M&A (robotics, US start-ups) destroyed value: ¥9.2bn was written off in FY2025.

IR and management credibility

  • FY2026 start (date not checked): MTP "Building the Future 2030" launched, covering FY2026–FY2030 (有報 p.11).
  • 2026-02: FY2026 guide raised, with a dividend increase (Kabutan, 2026-02-16).
  • 2026-08-14: MTP targets raised after year one to ¥212.5bn sales and 32% OPM, and the ROE/ROIC KPIs raised to ≥20% / ≥19% (有報 p.11, p.13).
  • Disclosure quality: constant-FX tables, per-currency OP sensitivity and a regional breakdown by therapy area (説明会 p.5, p.9, p.21).
  • Weak spot: M&A record. Four acquired or start-up units were impaired in FY2025. Robotics and new-therapy bets have not yet paid off, and the company itself says new devices contribute only from FY2031.

Valuation and scenarios

Share count is about 265m (inference: ¥927.9bn market cap ÷ ¥3,497). The basis is FY2028/06 EPS, about 1.5 years forward.

What the price implies: ¥3,497 ÷ 23x gives EPS of about ¥152 for FY2028/06, or NP of about ¥40bn. That is about 6% below consensus, a modest haircut for China risk.

Why the market might be right: the margin is guided flat at about 32% to 2030. Europe grew only 4.5% ex-FX. A Chinese distributor is 12% of sales while VBP and buy-domestic policies widen. M&A has destroyed value. The FY2026 jump flattered from FX and one-off mix gains (low-margin products dropped).

Bull case

  • Q1 and H1 show gross margin above 71% and constant-FX growth of 13% or more. A guide raise in February 2027 lifts FY2028 consensus toward ¥47bn NP.
  • Non-cardiovascular (peripheral, neuro) becomes a second growth leg in the US and Europe.
  • Net cash funds a second buyback, and the payout policy is raised.

Bear case

  • China expands centralised procurement to PCI guidewires and penetration catheters, or the main distributor loses share to domestic makers.
  • The yen strengthens: each ¥1 on CNY is about ¥1.8bn of OP (3.5% of the guide).
  • US tariffs rise beyond the ¥1.15bn absorbed in FY2026.
  • More impairments from the robotics and US venture portfolio.

What would change the rating

  • Upgrade to Buy if Q1 OP is ¥16bn or more with gross margin of 71% or more and China growth at constant FX above 15%. Also upgrade if the price falls below about ¥3,050 (19x FY2028 consensus EPS) without China deterioration.
  • Downgrade to Sell if a VBP round covering PCI guidewires is announced with price cuts above 30%, or Q1 China sales fall YoY.
  • Thesis invalidated if gross margin falls below 68% for two quarters, showing the productivity gains were cyclical.
